Editor's Reviews

Overview:

LibreOffice has the power to liberate you from the Microsoft Office price tag. It contains a robust package of office productivity tools that will serve all your needs.

Pros:

LibreOffice is the closest substitute to Microsoft Office that you will find out there—and did I mention it is 100% FREE? LibreOffice is a free office productivity suite for creating text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and much more. Even better, you can save all of them in either Open Document Format (ODF) or Microsoft Office formats.

Those switching to LibreOffice will find the learning curve to be extremely short. It’s interface will be familiar to anyone who has ever used Microsoft Office, allowing you to quickly identify and use the tools and features you are looking for. You can even customize your interface with various toolbars that you use frequently, or remove the toolbars that you don’t need.

In addition, sharing between LibreOffice and Microsoft Office is seamless. You have the choice of what format you would like to save your document despite the default being ODF. Also, you’ll be able to open and edit any Microsoft Office files since LibreOffice automatically converts files into a readable format. So there’s no need to worry that your free software will cause any communication troubles with Microsoft Office users.

Cons:

For those who need more advanced features of office productivity software, LibreOffice may be a bit lacking for you. The primary feature is lacks if macro and programming capability. So if you’re used to having custom commands and macros, then LibreOffice will not fit the bill. But, for your average everyday users who need a fully functional word processor, or spreadsheet and presentation software, LibreOffice is right on target.

Additionally, LibreOffice’s help and support features leave something to be desired. Sure, we don’t need Microsoft Clippy popping up every few keystrokes, but a more put together resource could really help LibreOffice’s cause. Despite the interface being familiar to Microsoft Office users, the help feature is always key for those less used features and tools that you need to look up!

Final Verdict:

LibreOffice is the best free alternative to Microsoft Word and other paid office productivity suites. It’s familiar interface will make converting easy, and users will find it fully functional and useful is either a business or personal environment.
